York Knights return to the LNER Community Stadium to face Wakefield Trinity in the Betfred Super League on Friday 27th March (8pm!).
It’s the first time the clubs have come up against each other since 2024, when their last meeting was in the Betfred Championship play off semi-final at the DIY Kitchens Stadium. Wakefield won 22-13 that day, and went on to beat Toulouse Olympique in the final to earn promotion back to Super League at the first time of asking.
York met Wakefield a total of four times that season, losing 40-4 at the LNER Community Stadium in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup, before a 50-6 defeat in the league at home, and a 20-4 loss in the league at Wakefield.
Since returning to the top flight, Wakefield have flourished, reaching the play offs last year after a tremendous season. This year, they currently sit 6th in the table, having won three of their opening five games.
So far, they’ve beaten Huddersfield (18-16), Hull FC (14-10) and Leigh (18-14), and had a great win over Leeds Rhinos (24-14) to progress to the quarter finals of the Betfred Challenge Cup.
After last week’s narrow defeat at Wigan, York are 10th in the table, after two wins from their first five games. Like Trinity, they too have a Challenge Cup quarter final tie to look forward to next month.
Now in Knights’ colours, York forward, Josh Griffin will be coming up against his former club for the first time since leaving them at the end of last season. He played in all four games against York in 2024.
Other York players coming up against their former clubs include Ben Jones-Bishop and Paul McShane.
Familiar faces in Wakefield’s squad include Cameron Scott, who played four games for York in 2019 on loan from Hull FC, Corey Hall, who was loaned from Leeds for three games in 2021, and York born, Oli Pratt, who impressed with six tries in 11 games on loan from Wakefield in 2023.
