York Knights v Widnes Vikings: Play-Off Eliminator Match Preview

🤝 York RLFC Match Previews are proudly sponsored by David Lloyd York!

York Knights face Widnes Vikings in the Betfred Championship Eliminators, looking to progress to the play-off semi finals at the LNER Community Stadium on Saturday (3pm)!

After 26 rounds of regular games, it’s the business end of the year with knock-out rugby league taking centre stage.

York finished in fourth place after winning 15 of their matches, with Widnes one point behind from 14 wins and one draw.

It was one win each in the league this year, with the Vikings victorious at the LNER Stadium, 22-18 in June, while the Knights picked up the points in a 12-6 win at the DCBL Stadium just last month.

After York’s defeat by the Vikings in June, they went on to win all but four of their remaining 16 games, including away at Toulouse Olympique for the first time since 2011, and doing the double over Featherstone Rovers for the first time since 1956/7.

After last week’s thrilling 16-6 win over Featherstone clinched the home tie today, Mark Applegarth’s side are one of the Championship’s most in-form teams.

Widnes go into the match after winning three of their last eight games, including a narrow 26-24 win at Barrow last weekend to make sure of their place in the top six, and with it, their first appearance in the play-offs following their relegation from Super League in 2018.

York, on the other hand, have reached the eliminators in both of the last two seasons.

In 2022, James Glover’s towering kick clinched them a 22-20 win at Halifax, before they were knocked out in the semi-finals by Super League bound Leigh Centurions, 70-10.

Last year, the Knights earned a tie at Bradford Bulls at this stage, but the season ended with a 22-8 defeat.

After two closely contested games already this season, Saturday afternoon’s encounter promises to be another thriller.
