York RLFC Learning Disability Rugby League (LDRL) team has been represented at a prestigious national event held during this year's Labour Party Conference in Liverpool.

Phil Kelly, who has been a valued member of the club for several years, joined participants from across the country for a session led by LDRL coaches, giving MPs and invited guests the opportunity to experience the programme first-hand.

Hosted by the Rugby Football League and Community Integrated Care at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium, the event brought MPs, players, families and support staff together to showcase the positive impact rugby league can have on health, wellbeing, confidence and independence.

Phil said he was proud to take part in the event for York RLFC Foundation and the LDRL team.

"The Community Integrated Care event was a very special occasion. I was incredibly proud to represent York RLFC Learning Disability Rugby League and share how playing rugby league has changed my life.

"I also had the opportunity to meet Rugby Football League referee Tara Jones and St Helens legend Jodie Cunningham, which made the day even more memorable.

"The message I would give to everyone is that rugby league is a family sport and we welcome anyone to come and give it a go. Whether someone has a physical disability or a learning disability, there are fantastic coaches and support staff who help people build confidence, enjoy the game and feel part of a team.

"As the late Rob Burrow said, 'Anyone can play Rugby League, no matter what weight or size you are. In a world of adversity, we must dare to dream.'"

Everyone at York RLFC Foundation is immensely proud of Phil for being an outstanding ambassador for the club and for LDRL. His passion, enthusiasm and commitment continue to inspire those around him and embodies the inclusive spirit that sits at the heart of the programme.

York RLFC Foundation's Learning Disability Rugby League programme offers a welcoming, inclusive environment where players can develop their skills, build confidence, make new friends and enjoy being part of the Knights family.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the programme is encouraged to get in touch and discover how they can become part of the Knights family.

If you or someone you know would like to find out more about joining the team, please contact York RLFC Inclusion Officer, Dawn Shore by emailing Inclusion@yorkrlfc.com or calling 01904 670 880.
