York RLFC Foundation launches 2024 Inclusion Programme

York RLFC Foundation are delighted to announce the launch of our 2024 Inclusion Programme!

The Foundation delivers a range of community initiatives to schools and communities throughout York and North Yorkshire, inspiring communities and changing lives through the power of sport.

The Inclusion Programme is a key component of the Foundation's wide range of initiatives and we are pleased to confirm the details of our Wheelchair Rugby League, Learning Disability Rugby League and Sporting Futures programmes in 2024.

York RLFC Wheelchair Rugby League

York RLFC's Wheelchair side enjoyed a tremendous debut season in 2023, following on from the success of the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup the previous year, with more than 25 registered players joining the Club.

After finishing second in the North Division, the First-Team Wheelchair side will now compete in the second-tier Championship in 2024 while the Regional 'A' Team are taking part in a series of friendlies this year.

Wheelchair action continues in 2024 with training for both the First-Team and Regional 'A' Team resuming on Monday 25th March (7pm-9pm) at the Main Sports Hall of the York Sport Centre at the University of York (YO10 5NA).

Wheelchair training sessions are turn-up-and-play and priced at just £5 per player, to be paid by cash on the night.

Learning Disability Rugby League

York RLFC's Learning Disability Rugby League side are proud to be an established founder member of the Community Integrated Care Learning Disability Super League (LDSL), which launched in 2019.

A non-competitive variant of the sport centred around inclusion and participation, LDRL is open to players with learning disabilities and allowing them to represent York RLFC against other rugby league clubs.

York RLFC's LDRL side return to training on Wednesday 13th March (6pm-7pm) at the York St John University Sports Park (YO31 8TA), with all sessions running every Wednesday thereafter.

LDRL training sessions are FREE to attend, with participants asked to complete the following form to aid with planning purposes by clicking HERE.

Sporting Futures

York RLFC Foundation are also pleased to confirm the return of Sporting Futures, a workshop aimed at providing employability skills to young people in North Yorkshire with learning or physical disabilities.

Delivered jointly with Disability Sport Yorkshire, the sessions seek to engage, motivate and inspire all participants, offering learning through practical experiences and aiming to assist individuals in identifying areas and possibilities in volunteering or employment.

Topics which will be covered in the 14-week Sporting Futures workshops include:

  • Work ethic, customer service, travel training, first aid, CV and interview preparation skills

  • Work experience and hands-on training in setting up changing rooms, ground maintenance, club shop assistance, programme sales and stewarding

  • Event experience such as planning an event, food hygiene, menu planning, money handling, service and cafe assistance

Sporting Futures workshops are open to young people aged between 19-26 who are not in education, training or employment through a training programme.
