York RLFC Foundation is proud to announce it has successfully secured funding through the first round of the Mayor’s Movement, Activity and Sport Fund — unlocking exciting new opportunities to grow participation and strengthen communities across York and North Yorkshire.
The fund has awarded more than £1 million to 49 projects across the region, supporting local organisations, charities and community groups to help people of all ages get active, enjoy the outdoors and improve their wellbeing. The York RLFC Foundation Active Workforce programme has received £17,999 of funding from David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire and York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.’
Focused on tackling inequalities, early intervention, and enhancing both physical and mental health, the investment marks a significant step forward in expanding access to sport and activity — something that sits at the heart of York RLFC Foundation’s work.
David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said:
“Sport changed my life and saved my life. I want more people to have the same opportunities to lead more active lives, improving their physical and mental health.
That’s why we’re investing over £1 million into 49 projects across the region. From Grassington to Scarborough, we’re ensuring that people of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to lead more active lives.
Movement, activity, and sport play a huge role in improving mental health and tackling social isolation. I can’t wait to get out and see the impact of these investments first-hand as we prepare for our next round of funding.”
The North Yorkshire Sport Active Communities Team added:
“We’re really excited to see the passion and commitment for improving access to movement, activity and sport across North Yorkshire.
This investment will see organisations work with communities to increase engagement in movement.”
For York RLFC Foundation, the funding will play a vital role in strengthening the community rugby league workforce — ensuring the organisation can continue to grow its reach and impact across the region.
Adam Prentis, Delivery Manager at York RLFC Foundation, said:
“We’re incredibly grateful to receive this support through the Mayor’s Movement, Activity and Sport Fund. Work has already started to deliver upon some of these targets, with much more to come within the next 18 months. This investment allows us to recruit, develop and retain a strong community workforce, ensuring we can continue to deliver high-quality opportunities across York and North Yorkshire.
The funding will be used to upskill our existing staff and volunteers, while also attracting and training new volunteers to support the growth of rugby league following the success of both the Knights and Valkyrie at the elite level.
A key focus for our Foundation is creating more inclusive opportunities for all. This is something we have been committed to since our work began. By building and supporting a skilled and diverse workforce, we can break down barriers to participation and ensure more people feel confident taking part in sport.
Ultimately, this investment will leave a lasting legacy, helping us to expand our delivery, strengthen community connections, and support more people to improve their physical and mental wellbeing through activity.”
