York Valkyrie return to the field for the first time in more than a month on Sunday afternoon as they resume their Betfred Women’s Super League campaign against Barrow Raiders (12pm).
The Valkyrie have had a month away amid the breaks for the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Final and international fixture between England and France, having not featured since the 44-4 rout of Warrington Wolves at the start of June.
York currently find themselves in fourth-place on eight points after the first five rounds of the Betfred Women’s Super League, with four wins and just one defeat on their record and trailing leaders Leeds Rhinos, who have played one match more, by two points.
After convincing wins over Huddersfield Giants (12-50) and Warrington (44-4) before the break, Lindsay Anfield’s side will be hoping to build their way into a strong run of form during their next three fixtures, all of which are on home soil, ahead of a crunch clash at St Helens at the end of the month.
Newly-promoted pair Barrow and Featherstone Rovers, the latter winning Group Two of the BWSL and the former going up through the Play-Offs, are next up for York before a meeting with last year’s Play-Off Semi-Final opponents Wigan Warriors, whom the Valkyrie beat thrice in 2023.
First up are Barrow though this afternoon. The Raiders have just two wins to their name so far in 2024.
From their opening half-a-dozen league outings, a 22-10 win at home to Featherstone in late has been their solitary BWSL success while in the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup, the Raiders fell at the Group Stage, their sole triumph being a 46-0 win at Salford Red Devils.
The Valkyrie are set to field two debutants this afternoon in the form of Canada Co-Captain and loose forward Megan Pakulis alongside young prospect and back-rower/centre Evie Sexton.
Pakulis boasts huge experience, having earned a place in the World Cup Team of the Tournament in 2022 for her displays with Canada, while 17-year-old Sexton is at the beginning of her career, having come through the youth system at Hull FC.
Anfield is likely to be forced into a reshuffle in her side amid long-term injuries for Tamzin Renouf (elbow), Kelsey Gentles (knee), Ashleigh Hyde (knee) and a knee issue to Lacey Owen, who will be out for two to three weeks.
Centres Carrie Roberts and Manuqalo Komaitai are also missing due to work commitments with the Army, although full-back Tara Jane Stanley and winger Eva Izumi will return following injury problems.
