York Valkyrie v Cardiff Demons - Match Preview

🤝 York RLFC Match Previews are proudly partnered by David Lloyd York!

York Valkyrie will be seeking to book their place in the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Semi-Finals for the third straight season when they host Cardiff Demons on Sunday afternoon (2pm).

York topped Group Three after three convincing victories, overcoming Barrow Raiders 4-44, thrashing Hull KR by a Club record 122-0 margin and toppling Leigh Leopards 0-54.

No other team scored more than the Valkyrie’s 220 points during the three group stage matches while only Leeds Rhinos conceded less than the four points let in by York.

Lindsay Anfield’s squad face a Cardiff side that placed second in Group One, after two wins from their three cup outings.

Cardiff responded from a 38-20 defeat to Wigan Warriors by beating Betfred Women’s Super League Group Two pair Salford Red Devils (8-12) and Featherstone Rovers (36-18).

The Demons’ progress will have shocked many, although those who follow the Betfred Women’s Super League South will know all about their quality.

The first two BWSL South titles were claimed by Cardiff, who went unbeaten through the entire 2021 season en route to beating the Army in the Grand Final.

Last year, Cardiff suffered just one regular season before beating Grand Final success against London Broncos.

Cardiff’s reward for their cup progress is a meeting with the Valkyrie.

York have reached the last four of the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup in the last two seasons.

A maiden Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Final appearance was secured in 2021, although that year’s treble winners St Helens denied York the silverware after a 34-6 win at the Leigh Sports Village.

Back in April last year, Anfield’s side were narrowly denied by the eventual Betfred Women’s Super League champions Leeds via a tight 26-24 defeat at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington.

If a third successive Semi-Final appearance was not motivation enough, the Valkyrie also have the extra incentive of aiming to move one step closer to the competition’s Final which, for the first time, is being held at Wembley Stadium, in a triple header alongside the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final and the Men’s Betfred Challenge Cup Final.

Just two wins separate the Valkyrie from such an historic occasion.

The LNER Community Stadium will host an historic double header involving two Betfred Challenge Cup Quarter-Final ties on Sunday.York Valkyrie face Cardiff Demons in the Betfred Women's Challenge Cup (2pm) before York Knights meet Betfred Super League side Leigh Leopards (5pm) in the Betfred Men's Challenge Cup.
