York Valkyrie v Featherstone Rovers: Challenge Cup Match Preview

York Valkyrie face Featherstone Rovers in their final group game in the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday (12pm)!

After a 56-0 win at Huddersfield Giants last time out, victory against Rovers will see Lindsay Anfield’s side progress through to the quarter-final stage of the competition.

The Valkyrie scored 11 tries in last week’s match, including a hat-trick from Eboni Partington and a brace each for Jazz Rampton on debut and Tamzin Renouf.

New signing Ellie Williamson also scored and kicked six goals on her debut, while co-captain, Sinead Peach crossed on her return to the side after a season out while she was pregnant.

This is the first cup game of the year for Featherstone Rovers, who are coached by Marie Colley. After leading Featherstone to promotion to the top flight in 2023, she was nominated for coach of the year, only to lose out on the accolade to York’s Anfield.

Rovers finished bottom of Super League at the end of last year after losing every game, before being relegated after losing to Leigh Leopards in the promotion play off final.

Now in the Championship, Rovers beat Hull FC 44-0 and lost 40-24 to London Broncos in their opening two matches this season.

Challenge Cup winners in 2012, Rovers’ best run recently saw them reach the semi-finals in 2022, only to lose to eventual winners, St.Helens. Last year they reached the quarter finals, where they were beaten by York, 70-0. Among the try scorers that day were Eboni Partington, Georgie Dagger and Lacey Owen, who all scored twice, while Tara-Jane Stanley kicked nine goals.
