York Valkyrie v Leeds Rhinos - Match Preview

🤝 York RLFC Match Previews are proudly partnered by David Lloyd York!

York Valkyrie will be aiming to complete the Betfred Women's Super League double over Leeds Rhinos when they meet the reigning champions on Sunday (12pm).

York made the perfect start to their BWSL campaign at Headingley Stadium in April, reeling off 22 unanswered points to triumph 34-12 in a statement season opener.

The two sides were locked at 12-12 after half an hour, with Tamzin Renouf and Ashleigh Hyde crossing for the Valkyrie and Keara Bennett and Eloise Hayward scoring for the Rhinos.

But the Valkyrie were imperious thereafter, with Hollie-Mae Dodd, Liv Gale, Tara Jane Stanley and Ellie Hendry all finding the whitewash without reply from the 2022 BWSL champions.

The victory was made all the sweeter owing to the fact that Leeds beat York 12-4 in the 2022 Grand Final at the Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens, the Valkyrie's maiden appearance in the BWSL finale.

Since that victory at Headingley Stadium, Lindsay Anfield's side have reached the halfway stage of the 2023 BWSL season with their 100% winning record still in tact.

Victories over St Helens (26-6), Warrington Wolves (44-4), Wigan Warriors (40-6) and Huddersfield Giants (8-48) have since followed in a dream start.

Leeds meanwhile have endured a tough start to their title defence, having also lost to St Helens (18-38) at Headingley Stadium after their defeat to the Valkyrie, to leave themselves third in the table, four points adrift of league leaders York.

The Rhinos have however recorded convincing victories over Huddersfield Giants (0-80), Warrington Wolves (0-88) and Wigan Warriors (0-54), showcasing their ability to post sizeable points in the process.

York Valkyrie continue their Betfred Women's Super League campaign against Leeds Rhinos on Sunday as part of a double header at the LNER Community Stadium, with York Knights taking on Sheffield Eagles in the Betfred Championship later that afternoon (3pm).
