There’s a big game this weekend for York Valkyrie as they host Wigan Warriors on Saturday in the Betfred Women’s Super League (12pm)!

The game is being played as part of a double header, with York Knights facing Wigan Warriors in the Betfred Super League at 3pm.

Wigan come as Super League Champions, League Leaders Shield holders and Betfred Challenge Cup winners, having retained the trophy with an emphatic win over St.Helens in the final at Wembley in May.

Coached by Denis Betts, they boast a number of England internationals, including Izzy Rowe and Jenna Foubister, alongside reigning Woman of Steel, Eva Hunter, who scored four tries at Wembley this year.

While it’s the first time the teams have met in the league this year, Wigan beat York 52-0 in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup, on their way to lifting the trophy for a second time.

Last year, York suffered a heavy 40-6 defeat away from home on the opening day of the season, but went on to be the only team to beat Wigan all year.

That was a 32-10 win at Newcastle after tries from Savannah Andrade, Emma Kershaw, Peace Lekuru, Rhiannion Marshall, Eboni Partington and Sinead Peach.

Both squads have had changes since then, with the likes of Megan Pakulis returning to York, and Monique Donovan and Petra Woods joining.

For Wigan, Shania Power and Emily Veivers have returned back to Australia after a season at the club, while they’ve brought in former Valkyrie, Kelsey Gentles and French International, Laureanne Biville has returned for a second spell.
