York RLFC Foundation is pleased to announce the return of Rugby League Community Junior Sessions for 2026 at Selby Raiders, with new players welcome!
The relatively newly formed club offers primary aged children the chance to engage with rugby league in a welcoming and accessible local venue, with sessions overseen by York RLFC Foundation staff.
The Foundation remains committed to driving the growth of rugby league across North Yorkshire and continues to recognise the region’s significant potential for expansion and long-term development. In addition to its work in Selby, the Foundation will also continue to support the development of rugby league in Scarborough. Sessions in the area will be delivered both in schools and in Community settings. More news on our developments in Scarborough to follow shortly!
Building on last year’s successful programme, the weekly community sessions in Selby will return to Barlby High School, catering for children in school years 3–6 (Key Stage 2). This move reflects the Foundation’s continued efforts to strengthen provision within the Selby district.
Over the past year, the Foundation has expanded its presence in Selby, doubling the number of primary schools receiving its in-school curriculum delivery. This work has been supported further by the establishment of Raiders Rugby League, a new community club formed within the district, which has already benefited from increased local participation and awareness. This enhanced schools-based offer complements the Foundation’s existing holiday outreach programme, delivered in collaboration with community partners. Together, these initiatives have helped elevate the visibility of both York RLFC and rugby league across the region.
In order to celebrate the return of the Raiders club, the Foundation is offering the first 20 players completing the registration form before the first session, a free rugby ball. Please get in touch to find out more!
York RLFC Foundation Community Coach Mark Prangnell said:
“North Yorkshire has enormous potential for rugby league growth, and we look forward to seeing participation in Selby continue to increase this year. With success of the both the Knights and Valkyrie on the field, the benefits are being seen much wider than ever before.
"For the past couple of years, the Foundation has targeted delivery within schools and holiday clubs with the specific aim of raising the sports profile in the area and help create a new playing offer, with the inception of the Raiders.
"We aim to build on this momentum in 2026 and continue providing playing opportunities for local children. Although the club is not currently entered into a league, the idea is to arrange a handful of local fixtures through the summer season and attend local festivals as an introduction to the sport. No previous playing experience needed.
"For any parents reading this and worried about their child being introduce to a contact sport, our sessions aim to instil confidence over a long period of time with some players at the club happy to be included through the use of tag rugby whilst working towards contact rugby over several weeks at a pace that suits them.
"We also continue to reach out to any potential volunteers as we aim to develop and support a local volunteer workforce and help drive the club forward.”
