York Valkyrie return to action after a three week break on Sunday with a big game against Leeds Rhinos in the Betfred Women’s Super League at AMT Headingley Stadium (12pm).
With three games to go in the regular season a home tie in the play offs is still at stake for Lindsay Anfield’s side who currently lie in fourth place, two points behind the Rhinos in second.
Both clubs are already assured of a top four finish.
Leeds were the first team to beat the Valkyrie in the league in more than a year when they won 16-10 at the LNER Community Stadium back in May.
Ebony Partington and Lacey Owen scored for the Valkyrie that day while Tara-Jane Stanley added two goals. Caitlin Beevers and Shona Hoyle crossed for the Rhinos while Ruby Enright added four goals.
That was the first of three league defeats in what has been a difficult season for York, but a narrow defeat at St.Helens (10-6) and then wins at Warrington (61-0) and at home to Huddersfield Giants (48-10) have started to get them back on track.
Tara-Jane Stanley ended the game against the Giants with a tally of 20 points, after scoring two tries and kicking six goals.
Leeds Rhinos beat Wigan Warriors 28-0 last time out in what was head coach, Lois Forsell’s last game before going on maternity leave. This will be the first game with assistant coach, Leon Crick in interim charge.
The Rhinos have lost only twice in the league this year, with both defeats coming against St.Helens, who they also lost to in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley.
Former Valkyrie players, Grace Field and Liv Whitehead are likely to face their former side having moved to the Rhinos in the close season.
