Wigan Warriors 52-0 York Valkyrie: Challenge Cup Semi-Final Match Report

York Valkyrie failed in their quest to reach the Betfred Challenge Cup Final, and get a first ever appearance at Wembley, after falling to a disappointing 52-0 defeat by cup holders Wigan Warriors.

The Valkyrie conceded nine tries on a day where they made too many errors and gave away numerous penalties against a team which looked well drilled and more together.

Wigan scored three tries early in the game, and although York stemmed the tide a little, Jenna Foubister went in to build a 24-0 lead at the break.

With five more tries in the second half, Leon Pryce’s side are now left to focus on the league, which begins next week.

The first try went in after just three minutes, when a forward pass allowed Wigan good field position. Slick passing found Ellise Derbyshire on the wing to score in the corner. Izzy Rowe added the first of eight conversions.

Mary Coleman then strolled through a huge gap after great work from Megan Williams, before Derbyshire got her brace, taking advantage of a combination between Foubister and Grace Banks.

York looked to settle and managed to go set for set with the Warriors, but were starved of any opportunities to score.

Rowe made a break through some weak tackling to put Foubister in, and the Warriors were already all but through to the final.

The Valkyrie needed to get points on the board first if they were to come back in the game, but two more tries in the first ten minutes of the second half put paid to any hopes. Ruby Hunter went through from a Foubister pass before Rowe saw a big gap to add a try to her points tally.

Another big gap allowed Coleman to go over for a second try, before Anna Davies got two tries in the last five minutes to seal back to back Wembley appearances.
