Wigan Warriors v York Knights: Match Preview

York Knights return to the Betfred Super League on Thursday 19 March to face last season’s Grand Final runners-up, Wigan Warriors at the Brick Community Stadium (8pm)!

It’s the first time the clubs have met in the league since 1985/86, when York were in the top flight. They’ve met just once since, in the Betfred Challenge Cup in 2021, when Wigan won 26-0 at the LNER Community Stadium.

After a treble winning year in 2024, Wigan didn’t win any silverware last year, and they’ll be keen to pick up trophies this season.

They’re top of the table and unbeaten so far this year, progressing to the Challenge Cup quarter finals with a win over Bradford Bulls, and winning all four of their opening Super League games, beating Castleford, Hull FC, Leigh and Toulouse.

The Knights have won two from four in the league, and are also in the cup quarter finals after a 56-10 victory over Keighley Cougars in round 4.

York last beat Wigan in 1981, winning 24-20 at Clarence Street in Division 1 after both teams had won promotion to the to division the season before. You have to go back further to find the last time York won at Wigan. They drew 17-17 at Central Park in a league game in 1979/80, but York’s last win came in a 13-7 Challenge Cup victory in 1934.

Wigan boast a squad full of internationals, including half back, Harry Smith, forward, Junior Nsemba and winger Liam Marshall. However, two of their stars will miss this game because of injury. Bevan French is ruled out with a hamstring tear and Jai Field is still recovering from surgery after appendicitis.

The Knights will still be without Jordan Thompson, after the forward picked up a bicep injury against Warrington Wolves two weeks ago.

Join us at the Brick Community Stadium on Thursday 19th March (8pm) as York Knights travel to face Wigan Warriors!
