Wigan Warriors v York Valkyrie: Match Preview

York Valkyrie travel to Wigan Warriors on Saturday 15th August for their second game in the Betfred Women’s Super League Super 4s (12pm)!

After defeat last week at Leeds Rhinos, it’s another tough test for the Valkyrie against the reigning Super League Champions and Betfred Challenge Cup holders.

Wigan are currently top of the table, having won all of their games in all competitions so far this season, including last week’s opening round of this stage of the competition at St.Helens, 44-6.

Denis Betts’ side are, in fact, unbeaten for almost a full year. The last time they lost was against York in August 2025, when the Valkyrie were 32-10 winners in a game played in Newcastle. Savannah Andrade, Emma Kershaw, Peace Lekuru, Rhiannion Marshall, Eboni Partington and Sinead Peach all scored for York that day.

York have met Wigan twice already this season, losing 52-0 in the Betfred Challenge Cup semi-final in May, and then going down 32-10 in the league at the LNER Community Stadium in June. After trailing that game 20-0 at half time, Leon Pryce’s side battled to draw the second half 12 points each.

The Valkyrie are currently fourth in the table, two points behind St.Helens, and still looking for their first win of the season against one of the teams above them.

However, coach Leon Pryce was happy with the improvements from his team in last week’s defeat at Headingley, which included a return to action for Tara-Jane Stanley after almost two years out with injury.
