York Knights fell to a 36-16 defeat against Whitehaven RLFC at the LNER Community Stadium in the Betfred Championship.
Tries from Edene Gebbie, Guy Graham, Ryan King and Rio Corkill gave Whitehaven a 26-0 lead at half-time that was extended by early second-half scores from Joey Romeo and Lachlan Hanneghan.
York cut the deficit through three tries in the space of 10 minutes from Joe Brown, Jimmy Keinhorst and Tom Lineham but the Knights had left themselves too much to do to mount a comeback.
Whitehaven took the lead inside the first five minutes, going ahead when Gebbie finished off a neat shift play from left to right.
Jake Carter added the conversion, his first of five conversions from six attempts, and then landed a penalty goal from 20m out in centrefield.
Graham followed Gebbie over the whitewash 10 minutes later, with the prop capitalising on Jamie Doran’s grubber kick which cruelly deflected off Ukuma Ta’ai into the path of the front-rower, who went under the sticks.
Before the half-hour mark, King scooted out of dummy-half under the posts and Whitehaven found a fourth first-half try when Corkill broke away down the right edge.
Early in the second half, Romeo added his name to the scoresheet when cutting back inside from the left flank to finish a Jake Maizen pass and Whitehaven rounded off their try-scoring exploits when Lachlan Hanneghan stepped over, capitalising on Haven’s man advantage following Will Dagger’s sin-bin for dissent.
Just after the hour, York finally got themselves on the scoreboard when Brown touched down Nikau Williams’ pass to the right corner.
Dagger returned from the bin to land the conversion before putting Keinhorst in at the left edge and again nailing the two-pointer.
The full-back also assisted York’s third try, feeding Lineham for a stroll-in at the left corner from a neat scrum set play.
