York Knights v Halifax Panthers: AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Match Preview

York Knights turn their attention to cup action this weekend, when they take on Halifax Panthers in the first round for the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday (3pm)!

It’s the first of back to back fixtures between the two, with York hosting the Panthers again next week in the Betfred Championship.

Both York and Halifax have decent records in the competition. Halifax won the cup at Wembley in 2023, beating West Yorkshire rivals Batley Bulldogs 12-10, while the Knights reached the final in 2021, losing 41-34.

Scorers for York that day were Ben Jones-Bishop, Marcus Stock, Kriss Brining, Jason Bass, Mikey Lewis, and Perry Whiteley, with Kieron Dixon kicking five goals.

Last year, the Knights reached the semi finals, losing 28-18 at home to Sheffield Eagles, while the Panthers didn’t make it out of the group stages.

This year, Halifax have had a good start to their league season, beating both Sheffield Eagles and Barrow, in contrast to the Knights, who are still looking to pick up their first points of the year.

‘Fax, now coached by former St.Helens half back, Kyle Eastmond, will be missing a couple of players for this game. Australian forward, Owen McCarron is suspended while Charlie Graham has a hand injury.

There are also some familiar faces in their squad, with former Knights, Tom Inman, Ronan Dixon and James Saltonstall all now wearing the blue and white hoops.

For the Knights, captain, Liam Harris is expected to be available after missing last week’s defeat by Toulouse, providing he passes his return to play protocols, after a concussion in the defeat at Oldham on the opening day of the season.
