York Knights v Keighley Cougars: Challenge Cup Match Preview

York Knights continue their Betfred Challenge Cup campaign with a fourth round tie against Keighley Cougars on Saturday 14th March at the LNER Community Stadium (12pm)!

The winners of this tie will earn a place in the quarter finals of the competition.

The Knights reached this stage after a 32-6 win at Barrow Raiders last month, with tries from Toa Mata’afa, Paul Vaughan, Jesse Dee, Oli Field, Jack Martin and two from Nikau Williams.

Since then, York have started their inaugural season in Betfred Super League, winning two of their opening four matches.

Keighley have played in two previous rounds to reach this stage of the competition, overcoming York Community Club, Heworth, 66-0 at Elm Park Way in round 2, before edging past Midlands Hurricanes, 18-14 in round 3.

They’ve since had a mixed start to their season in the newly structured Betfred Championship, beating Goole and Whitehaven, losing Rochdale and Dewsbury, and last weekend drawing 16-16 at home to Workington. They sit in 10th place in the table.

It’s the second consecutive season the Knights and the Cougars have met in the Challenge Cup, with a second round tie at Cougar Park last year. York ran out 72-12 winners that day and met Hull KR in the next round.

The Knights scored 13 tries in that win, including two for Jack Teanby, who is now with the Cougars, and ten goals from Myles Harrison. However, Teanby won’t be facing his former club this weekend, with surgery on a shoulder injury ruling him out for around 10 weeks.

The game could see a return for former Knights forward, Ronan Michael, who is currently on loan with Keighley from Bradford Bulls.
