York Knights v Leeds Rhinos: Match Preview

  • 2 min read

York Knights host Betfred Super League leaders, Leeds Rhinos on Sunday 23rd August at the LNER Community Stadium (3pm)!

The game is a double header, with York Valkyrie taking on Leeds Rhinos women at noon.

Leeds arrive having lost just five league games all season, with the latest of those defeats being a 20-16 loss at Leigh Leopards last week. That result meant the Leopards have done the double over them this year.

Brad Arthur’s side has dominated the league this year, scoring almost 900 points in 23 rounds and being tipped to reach the Grand Final at Old Trafford in October. Winger, Maika Sivo scored 29 tries before being ruled out by injury, with that tally including two against York when they met at AMT Headingley in February. Leeds won that game 46-14 in what was the Knights’ first away game in the top flight.

They also boast more of the league’s top points scorers, with Brodie Croft notching 26 tries and Jake Connor top of the goal kicking charts with 120 so far.

This will be the Rhinos’ first competitive game at the LNER Community Stadium, and their first competitive game in the city since the Challenge Cup meeting in 1989 at Bootham Crescent. York lost 28-9 against a Leeds side containing the likes of Garry Schofield, Lee Crooks and Cliff Lyons, while Andrew Ettingshausen scored two tries at full back. Stuart Horton scored York’s only try and a drop goal, while St.John Ellis kicked two goals.

York’s last home win against Leeds was in January 1975, with a 12-11 win at Clarence Street, although they’ve only met in York six times since then.

The Knights are eleventh in the table after last week’s round of games, which saw them lose 30-10 at Warrington. The bottom end of the table is getting increasingly tight with four games to go, so there’s still plenty to play for.

Join us at the LNER Community Stadium for the double header against Leeds Rhinos in the Betfred Super League and Betfred Women's Super League!

The Valkyrie's game kicks off at 12.00pm  followed by the Knights at 3pm on Sunday 23rd August.
