York Knights return to Betfred Championship action when Sheffield Eagles visit the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday (3pm)!

The game is part of a double header, with York Valkyrie hosting St.Helens in the Betfred Women’s Super League (12pm).

After a blank weekend last week, it’s the first time the Knights have played since their AB Sundecks 1895 Cup win over Bradford Bulls, when they earned a place at Wembley for the final on 7th June.

In the league, Mark Applegarth’s side sit in sixth place after six wins from their opening ten games, and they’re currently on a run which has seen them lost just once in their last seven matches.

In contrast, it’s been a difficult season so far for Sheffield Eagles, under the guidance of coach, Craig Lingard who took over in the off season.

They’ve won just three games so far in the league, beating Featherstone Rovers 19-12, Batley Bulldogs 50-18 and London Broncos 22-20. However, they come in to the game on the back of a 22-18 defeat at struggling Hunslet Hawks.

Lingard has had to deal with a changing squad, with a number of players moving on. Two have joined York Knights, with Mitch Clark and Ben Jones-Bishop making the switch to the LNER Community Stadium. Most recently, former Knights centre James Glover has joined Featherstone Rovers.

If fit, there’ll be some familiar faces to York supporters in the Eagles squad. Corey Johnson signed a permanent deal with them at the start of the year from Leeds Rhinos. He made seven appearances on dual registration at York in 2021.

Former York prop, Masi Matongo is also part of Lingard’s squad, along with half-back, Morgan Smith, who signed in 2020 for York, only to suffer an ACL injury in pre-season and never make an appearance.

Cory Aston is in the halves, and there’s Super League experience in the backs with Kris Whelham and Matty Dawson-Jones.

The teams met four times last year, with the Eagles winning three of the games and the Knights one. Sheffield beat York at the LNER Community Stadium in the Betfred Challenge Cup (32-16), the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup (28-18) and in the league (18-10). The Knights got the points when they met at the Olympic Legacy Stadium in September, with a 26-24 victory.
