York Knights v Swinton Lions: Match Preview

🤝 York RLFC Match Previews are proudly sponsored by David Lloyd York!

York Knights will try to do the double over Swinton Lions in the Betfred Championship on Sunday when the sides meet at the LNER Community Stadium (3pm).

Despite slipping to ninth in the table last week after losing at Bradford Bulls, the Knights are still just two points outside the play off places.

The 36-28 defeat at Odsal was only their second loss in six games, and despite threatening to overturn a 20 point deficit in the second half, they weren’t able to return to North Yorkshire with what would have been a third consecutive win.

Swinton arrive in York on the back of last weekend’s defeat at home to Whitehaven, where the Lions conceded two tries in a ten minute spell near the end of the game to lose 22-20.

The last time York and Swinton faced each other in May at Heywood Road, the Knights pulled off a dramatic win that will live long in the memory.

Five tries in the last 12 minutes of the game from Jesse Dee, Joe Brown, Franklin Pele and two from Josh Daley, all converted by Taylor Pemberton, saw York overturn a 22-0 deficit to win 30-22.

Since then, Swinton have won three of their following seven games and are ninth in the table, two points behind York.

Victories over Featherstone Rovers (42-40), Widnes Vikings (24-12) and Sheffield Eagles (34-22) have helped them move away from the bottom two of the table.

Their squad has also changed, with half-back Dec Patton leaving to join Featherstone, and coach, Alan Kilshaw bringing forward, Jordan Brown back to the club after a spell at Salford and Welsh International, Ant Walker signing a two and a half year deal.

The last time Swinton beat York was in 2015, when a drop goal from Chris Atkin in golden point extra time gave them an 18-17 win to put them in to the League 1 Promotion Play Off Final.

York Knights return to the LNER Community Stadium to take on Swinton Lions in the Betfred Championship on Sunday (3pm)!
