York Knights v Whitehaven - Match Preview

York Knights will be seeking a fourth straight victory when they resume their Betfred Championship campaign at home to Whitehaven on Sunday afternoon (3pm).

York have beaten Barrow Raiders (28-14), Swinton Lions (40-0) and West Bowling (52-12) since last month’s 36-0 defeat at Toulouse Olympique, leaving the Knights fourth in the Betfred Championship table and safely into the Fourth Round of the Betfred Challenge Cup.

Andrew Henderson’s side take on a Whitehaven outfit that have taken just one win from their opening six matches.

Two tries and four goals from Sam Freeman inspired a 20-4 victory over newly-promoted Swinton at the LEL Arena in February.

In-between that sole triumph, heavy defeats were inflicted by promotion favourites Featherstone Rovers and Toulouse, Haven going down 76-4 and 72-10 at Post Office Road and the Stade Ernest-Wallon respectively.

Having conceded 196 points from their opening five league fixtures, the Cumbrian Club hold the worst defensive record in the Betfred Championship to date.

Whitehaven have also fallen short in two meetings with London Broncos, losing 20-16 on home soil in the league and 32-10 in the Betfred Challenge Cup at Plough Lane. A 24-8 defeat at Play-Off contenders Bradford Bulls began the 2023 season.

As well as the contrasting fortunes of the two sides to date, the Knights are likely be buoyed by the returns of two key players.

Centre James Glover is set to feature after missing the Cup win over West Bowling due to the birth of child while Ata Hingano is in line for a recall after a foot problem in the win at Swinton.

Forward Bailey Antrobus is available for selection after being cleared of a Grade ‘F’ charge of unnecessary conduct against Swinton. The RFL Tribunal upheld Antrobus’ not guilty plea.

Tickets are still available for York Knights' clash with Whitehaven at the LNER Community Stadium. General admission tickets are priced at £20 for adults, £15 for concessions and FREE for Under-16s.
