York RLFC Foundation is excited to launch a brand-new programme designed to help young people link what they learn in the classroom to real-life situations!
Words That Count, created by the National Literacy Trust in partnership with Experian, supports young people aged 14–19 to build confidence in budgeting, saving, and understanding everyday financial language.
York RLFC Foundation is the latest Foundation to deliver the programme, which has played an important role across the country in helping students feel more prepared for adult life.
As well as using videos and practical advice, The National Literacy Trust has also developed an interactive quiz for all young people to access.
Evaluations have already shown great results, with more than 90% of participants saying they now understand the importance of saving, and over 85% feeling more capable of managing their money.
To celebrate this year’s education-themed match day, York RLFC Foundation is also donating 50 brand-new reading books to local school libraries, helping even more young people discover the joy of reading.
The Foundation continues to support literacy across the city through a range of National Literacy Trust programmes. Along with the Words That Count programme, there is the Heritage Programme, specifically designed for School Years 5 and 6, using cross-curriculum links to explore the club's 150-year history, and On The Same Team, a partnership with Community Integrated Care providing anti-bullying education.
Adam Prentis, Delivery Manager at York RLFC Foundation, said: “The National Literacy Trust has been a great support in helping us embed literacy and reading across the curriculum.
“From providing age-appropriate books for our classroom libraries to offering training and resources for targeted interventions, they’ve helped us support pupils with complex literacy needs. Anything we can do to help improve pupils’ reading ages month on month is a huge focus for us, and these programmes have definitely contributed to that.”
Beth Grady, Senior Project Manager at the National Literacy Trust added: “It’s been a pleasure collaborating with York RLFC Foundation.
“Their dedication to championing literacy and supporting young learners is inspiring. The team is clearly committed to supporting young people in the York area to develop their financial literacy skills through the Words that Count programme. Their ongoing support has been invaluable, and we look forward to continuing to make a difference together.”
