York Valkyrie will be seeking to leapfrog Wigan Warriors in the Betfred Women’s Super League table when the two sides meet at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday (12pm).
York and Wigan currently each sit on 12 points in the BWSL, with the Valkyrie having won six of their first seven league matches and the Warriors having prevailed in six of their eight league outings to date.
The Valkyrie head into this weekend on the back of four successive BWSL victories, scoring 200 points and conceding just 16 in the process.
After wins over current bottom four Huddersfield Giants (12-50), Warrington Wolves (44-4), Barrow Raiders (44-0) and Featherstone Rovers (62-0), Lindsay Anfield’s side face a far tougher challenge against Wigan this weekend.
Having reached the BWSL Play-Off Semi-Finals in 2022 and 2023, the Warriors are a growing force in the women’s game.
Former Widnes Vikings and Newcastle Thunder boss Denis Betts was appointed as the side’s new Head Coach during the off-season, providing a wealth of experience through his background coaching in the Betfred Super League and his storied playing career, which encompassed 36 combined caps for Great Britain and England.
Under Betts, Wigan have only lost to St Helens - the winners of the last four Betfred Women’s Challenge Cups - in the league this year, coming up short by just one score in last week’s 16-12 defeat at the DW Stadium.
The Valkyrie are set to be boosted by the return of England international back-rower Lacey Owen, who has been absent since the beginning of June due to a knee injury.
Centre Manuqalo Komaitai and Carrie Roberts could also be in line for recalls, having been unavailable for the past fortnight because of work commitments with the Army.
Tamzin Renouf (elbow), Rhiannion Marshall (knee), Kelsey Gentles (knee), Bettie Lambert (ankle), Alex Stimpson (knee), Ashleigh Hyde (knee) and Remi Wilton (wrist/hamstring) are all sidelined through injury.
Tickets for Sunday's clash between York Valkyrie and Wigan Warriors are priced at just £5 for Adults and Concessions (17-to-21-year-old and over-65s) and FREE for Under-16s.
