York Valkyrie go in search of their first away win in the Betfred Women’s Super League when they travel to Barrow Raiders at the Northern Competitions Stadium tomorrow (2pm).
York kicked-off the defence of their BWSL crown with a thrilling 20-16 victory over St Helens last time out at the LNER Community Stadium.
Having built a 12-0 lead during the first-half, St Helens roared back to lead 16-14 with a couple of minutes to go before a penultimate-minute winner from ex-Saint Carrie Roberts sealed a hard-fought two points for Lindsay Anfield’s side.
The victory continued the Valkyrie’s unbeaten start to the season following Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup victories over Sheffield Eagles (10-74) and Featherstone Rovers (80-6 and 70-0).
In the process, York also remained without a defeat in BWSL regular season competition since July 2022.
The Valkyrie make the visit to Cumbria to face a Barrow side who earned promotion from BWSL Group Two last year thanks to a triumph in the Play-Offs over Leigh Leopards, running out as 14-8 winners at the LNER Community Stadium.
The Raiders had narrowly missed out on automatic promotion to Featherstone Rovers, finishing level on 16 points with Fev but with a marginally weaker points difference of just five points.
Barrow’s start to life in the top-flight began with an 18-4 defeat to 2023’s BWSL Semi-Finalists Wigan Warriors at the DW Stadium last weekend while they suffered an exit in the Group Stages of the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup after narrow losses to Cardiff Demons (22-16) and Wigan Warriors (18-20).
York could hand a debut to new signing Remi Wilton, the former Brumbies rugby union star and ex-Canberra Raiders hooker, who arrived in the UK this week from Australia.
