Hull KR 48-10 York Knights: Challenge Cup Match Report

York Knights went out of the Betfred Challenge Cup, after a 48-10 defeat by the cup holders, Hull KR at Sewell Group Craven Park.

With a lengthy list of players unavailable through injury or being cup-tied, coach, Mark Applegarth again had to make changes to his team, bringing Myles Harrison and Joe Law in on loan from Newcastle Thunder.

The Knights got off to a slow start, and despite showing characteristic battling qualities, were never able to haul back the deficit against a near full strength Hull KR side.

The Robins scored after just 90 seconds of the game, with Tyrone May finishing off a move started by a break from Mikey Lewis, to get the first of a hat-trick.

Rhyse Martin missed the conversion in blustery conditions, but Hull KR soon extended the lead when Sauaso Sue charged over beneath the posts. This time, Martin added the kick.

York were struggling to gain any foothold in territory, but when they did, they managed to score. A short drop out gave possession to the Knights, and Josh Griffin fed Xavier Va’a to crash over. Harrison tagged on the goal to close the gap to four points.

However that was soon cancelled out, when Jack Broadbent found his way through to score just a few minutes later. Martin converted, and followed that with a penalty when York were deemed to have stolen possession in what was a kickable position.

A short pass from Jez Litten to Jai Whitbread for a converted try meant York trailed by 18 at the break.

It was a better start to the second half for the Knights, but they were still struggling to break down the Robin’s defence when they had the ball.

The first try of the half came in spectacular fashion. Lewis chipped the ball into space and regathered a high bounce, athletically touching down with just before reaching the dead ball line. He converted his own try.

Sue had a try ruled out for a double movement, but at the other end, York still worked hard to apply pressure. It paid off when Myles Harrison was released out wide and dived to get the ball down near the corner flag.

It was Hull KR who finished the stronger, with three more tries in the remaining 17 minutes. First, May showed some individual flair to open up space to score, before going in for his third try just three minutes later.

Right on the hooter, Joe Burgess flew in at the corner, and Lewis added a touchline conversion to bring the Knights’ cup run to an end.
