York RLFC were delighted to welcome over 200 school children to the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday for our annual Education Day!
School children from St Oswald’s Church of England Primary Academy, Robert Wilkinson Primary Academy School, Knavesmire Primary Schools and St Wilfrid’s R C Primary School were part of Education Day, with many attending a rugby league match for the first time.
The children took part in a pre-match Primary School Rugby League Festival on the LNER Community Stadium field before returning to play in front of the supporters during the half-time break of York Knights' clash with Sheffield Eagles.
The Join The Momentum dance group also took to the field for a special performance during the half-time interval while children also walked out the players as mascots and pre-match guard of honour flag bearers.
Alongside this, Robert Wilkinson Primary Academy pupil Jaxson was presented with his Education Day Warm-Up Top ahead of kick-off after being picked as the winner of the design-a-shirt competition run by the Foundation.
Jaxson was taken pitchside to meet York RLFC players and coaching staff and walked out as a mascot with York Knights Captain Liam Harris.
York RLFC Foundation Delivery Manager Adam Prentis said: "I’d like to thank all of the children, teachers and parents for supporting Education Day.
"We hope that Education Day is one of many ways that the Foundation is able to channel young people into our local community clubs and inspire them to keep playing sport and rugby league for many years to come.
"As the Academic year comes to the end, we are delighted to be able to use Education Day as a vehicle to reflect on the progressing and strong growing trends we are seeing in our work across schools in York as we plan to the next academic year and beyond.
"The Foundation has a presence in 46 primary schools and a dozen secondary schools across North Yorkshire, providing curriculum sessions, extra-curricular activities and assemblies to promote a healthy lifestyle and wellbeing."
