York Knights face champions, Hull KR in their historic opening game in Betfred Super League on Thursday 5th February at the LNER Community Stadium (8pm)!
For the first time since 1985/65, York are in the top flight, and they begin their first ever Super League match at home with one of the most exciting fixtures.
Willie Peters’ Hull KR made history themselves last year, winning the Betfred Super League title for the first time, adding the silverware to the Betfred Challenge Cup. They’ll face Brisbane Broncos next week in the World Club Challenge.
For Mark Applegarth’s side, it’s their first test at the higher level, following on from last week’s Challenge Cup tie at Barrow. It’ll also be a chance for fans to see some of the club’s new signings, including the likes of Paul Vaughan, Josh Griffin, Justin Sangare and Xavier Va’a in York colours and in action at the LNER Community Stadium for the first time.
Former Man of Steel, Mikey Lewis, will be making a return to York, where he spent time in 2021 on dual registration from Rovers. He’s gone on to be one of the stars of the game, and played for England against Australia in the Ashes series last Autumn.
He’s part of a settled Hull KR squad, which has had very few changes to the one that was so successful in 2025. Tom Amone and Karl Lawton are amongst just a handful of new faces hoping to defend their titles in 2026.
It was only a year ago when the two sides last met. On that occasion, it was the third round of the Betfred Challenge Cup, which Rovers won 44-2. The Knights’ points came from a penalty from Will Dagger.
With a full stadium expected, it’s sure to be a memorable evening as York Knights create history!
